Tell me the last time that you were blown away by an Airbnb you’ve stayed in. I’ve stayed in some nice places, of course, but never have I been truly jumping for joy on arrival or feeling slightly sad when returning the keys. My first experience of said “eureka” moment happened about two weeks ago and I’m thinking about it still on this Tuesday afternoon. In the interest of passing on a little joy, I thought I’d share with you one of the best places to stay in Margate – introducing The Well. Thank me later, or by bringing me along.
The Well is a “wellness residence” on Margate’s seafront complete with la bohemian aesthetic, high-ceilings and sea views on each floor. Owned by hosts Hannah and Adam, the home is inspired by their favourite places in the world and has been filled with items they’ve picked up on their travels – much like the EJP abode itself. Referencing India, Morocco and the local realms of Margate, the three-storey residence is filled with objects that tell a story.
The name and concept is based on the duo’s favourite philosophy:
Think of yourself as a well, if you’re constantly giving out all your energy without taking time to keep yourself topped up, you’re going to run dry. To be your best self you’ve got to take time to do things that fill you up with all that good energy that makes you, you.
Swoon! Filled with products and interior accessories that go that extra mile, The Well is both restorative and vibrant. I’m already thinking about when I can return. Catch a little sneak peek of the interior below.
Relax
The living quarters of The Well sit against high windows that flood the space with light. A comfy sofa and huge rattan lounge chairs provide the perfect setting for settling down with a book, or with a glass of wine and a good film. Sheepskin blankets and velvet cushions complete the cosy look and make you feel at home immediately.
Relaxation is key and there’s plenty of space to set out your yoga mat, learn about the powers of crystals and light the incense for a relaxing morning. A vinyl player sets the tone for a morning spent listening to The Rolling Stones over breakfast and perusal of one of the local Margate magazines. I’d advise staying here for at least four days just to spend one of them enjoying the house itself.
Eat
It’s not often that I want to cook when away but The Well had me wanting to stay put for as long as possible. Hello kitchen of my dreams! Turquoise tiling, marble countertops and more rattan detailing make this a rather special place to whisk up some grub, and the accompanying dining space is the perfect setting to gobble it all down in as a group.
Hi-tech appliances are seemingly a big deal around here and you’ll soon find yourself testing out all of the functions of the toaster, coffee machine, kettle…the list goes on. Alas, I couldn’t fit the toaster in my bag this time. Don’t fancy cooking? Hannah and Adam can also arrange chefs to deliver dishes or cook for a dinner party.
Drink
This is the kind of place where you’ll likely want to settle down with a drink and thankfully that’s something that has been considered. The honesty bar has an array of spirits and mixers to keep your thirst quenched and there’s even cocktail recipe cards to help you to host your own little cocktail party – no celebrations required!
Sleep
The Well has two en-suite bedrooms and you may just have to fight over them. ‘Luna’ has sea views and a roll top bath while ‘Helios’ is inspired by the Greek islands with white linens, natural materials and plenty of sunlight. Even the names have me smiling.
Sleep tight on the Eve mattress’ complete with plump pillows and Egyptian cotton sheets. I slept like a baby, even in the heat. It’s the addition of items such as the Robert radios and candles that ensure you feel looked after and will want to return. The textures and fresh and airy fabrics are key to the aesthetic of the rooms and this helps to make your stay feel clean and refreshing. Which bedrooms do you like the look of?
Bathe
There’s a bath in the bedroom. I repeat, there’s a bath in the bedroom. Make sure you’re the one to book so that you can call first dibs on ‘Luna’ where the roll-top bath looks out to sea and can be filled with salts and oils. This is the perfect set-up for a romantic break avec a sunset soak.
The rest of the bathrooms are piled to the nines with Haeckels products – a local luxury(and most sustainable) skincare brand, using all-natural ingredients from the coastline. You can find the shop just five minutes away, so no worries about stocking up on goods to take home with you.
