The Weekly Wall | #004 | Face The Sun by Survival Techniques, Tina We Salute You

47 King Henry’s Walk, Mildmay Ward, London N1 4NH

Nearest Station: Dalston Kingsland

The latest Weekly Wall comes courtesy of Naomi Edmondson, founder of Survival Techniques, a legal street art project that aims to promote hope and optimism and bring a little light to people having a dark day.

Situated outside Dalston favourite, Tina We Salute You, the mural invites passersby to ‘face the sun’ and well, I guess, see the good things in life. I know, I know, what sun? Right?! We are nearing the last days of Summer but that’s nothing that a lovely bright mural can’t sort out.

The café also opened up the inside walls for Edmondson to hang some prints and paintings and to install the Survival Techniques submissions box, where she invites people to describe what they do to feel better and to post these words in the box. Since the project began Edmondson has been collecting Survival Techniques from people, inspiring her work and turning some of them into paintings.

The whole concept of Survival Techniques started as a result of Edmondson feeling a little low and since then she has decorated the streets of London with uplifting messages and words of wisdom for those needing a little extra support. Something I’m fully on board with and think we should work on more as a community – you never quite know what can change someone’s life.

Next month, Survival Techniques will be hosting a solo art exhibition at Atom Gallery. The exhibition will feature original paintings, along with some brand new limited edition screen prints and a new mural in the garden space. Coinciding with World Mental Health day on October 10th, all work will be for sale and 10% of all money raised by the exhibition will go to Rethink Mental Illness charity.

The opening night party is on Friday 6th October and everyone is welcome. You can RSVP here if you’d like to attend and if not pop by the space until the 28th October (Weds-Sat 11am – 6pm).
